MW4 separates player ranks, DMZ levels, weapon levels and camo challenges, with different goals and reset rules for each. Player ranks run to 55 before a choice of Classic or Regular Prestige; DMZ has its own 70-level track. This guide brings the official October 19 progression details together, including the ten Prestiges, Prestige Master rewards, weapon leveling and the route from Military camos to mode Mastery.

Your progression checklist
- Player rank 55 opens a choice of Prestige; ten Prestiges lead to Prestige Master and eventually level 1,000.
- DMZ progression is separate, although DMZ XP also advances overall player rank.
- Classic resets loadout unlocks for extra benefits; Regular keeps them. Weapon Prestige is another optional system.
- Weapon levels open camo milestones and challenges; Divergence and mode Mastery require additional objectives.
- Use the camo tracker below to organize your chosen finish, keeping official requirements and unresolved details separate.

What are the MW4 rank and level caps?
MW4 has several progress tracks, so a single “max level” number can be misleading. The official October 19 guide separates them as follows:
| Track | Published target |
|---|---|
| Initial player ranks | Private I at level 1 through Commander at level 55; complete level 55 to choose Prestige. |
| DMZ level | A separate level 1–70 unlock track for DMZ rewards. |
| Player Prestige | Ten Prestiges, choosing Classic or Regular at each entry. |
| Player Prestige Master | Continues beyond level 55 to level 1,000, where you become Prestige Legend. |
| Weapon levels | Different caps per gun. Max level opens optional Weapon Prestige; Pyroclast rewards continue to Weapon Prestige Master level 250. |
DMZ XP also contributes to overall player progression, but Multiplayer and Warzone XP do not advance your DMZ level. Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, Side Ops and other DMZ activities feed its separate track. That track unlocks FOB stations and upgrades, recipes, equipment, Operator skins and other extraction-specific items.
The level-1,000 goal is player Prestige Master. It is not a requirement to use a weapon’s attachments, nor the same counter as a max-level DMZ Operator. Keep the label beside the number when planning a target.

How do player ranks unlock your loadout?
Earn player XP through matches, eliminations, objectives and challenges. The initial rank journey adds weapons, equipment, Perks, Field Upgrades and Killstreaks. Create-a-Class opens at player level 4; before that, Multiplayer uses preset loadouts. Later unlocks include the M4 at player level 14 and Cronen Squall at 55.
Those are access levels, not the guns’ own maximum levels. Unlocking the M4 lets you begin its separate weapon progression; it does not start the gun at weapon level 14. The official announcement includes full Multiplayer and DMZ unlock appendices, which are the reference for each item rather than a beta-era rank list.
Neither announcement provides a complete list of intermediate military rank names or XP required per rank. We have not filled those gaps with names or numbers from another Call of Duty game.
Which DMZ rank milestones matter?
Use your DMZ level for the extraction-specific unlocks below. It is separate from an individual Operator’s development and from the weapon you bring into a deployment.
| DMZ level | Published unlock |
|---|---|
| 4 / 9 / 15 / 19 | Reece / Coffey / Simone / Hector Operator access, respectively. |
| 5 | Vendor station. |
| 10 | Gunsmith station for weapons linked to owned Weapon Manuals and unlocked attachments. |
| 20 | Dog Tag Case. |
| 35 and 60 | Each milestone lists six additional weapon-stash slots. |
| 48 | Self-Revive Kit recipe. |
| 55 | Disposable Parachute recipe. |
| 70 | Advanced Sere Kit and an additional 18 item-stash slots, among the listed rewards. |
Recipes, station access and a ready-to-use consumable are different rewards. A parachute recipe does not mean every later parachute item is another crafting unlock. For the wider FOB system, see our Weapon Manuals and Gunsmith guide.
Should you choose Classic or Regular Prestige?
After completing player level 55, you can choose either path. You get the choice again on entering each subsequent Prestige, so you do not have to make one permanent path selection for your entire account.
| Path | What happens |
|---|---|
| Classic | Player rank restarts at 1. Level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress reset. You receive a 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token and bonus cosmetics. |
| Regular | Player rank restarts at 1 while level unlocks and Create-a-Class content stay available. Most Prestige rewards are shared, with additional rewards on Classic. |
A Classic token permanently unlocks one eligible loadout item. The publisher suggests considering Perks, equipment, Field Upgrades and Killstreaks: acquiring a weapon blueprint from the Store or a seasonal Battle Pass already makes that weapon’s base version permanently available. That is a planning consideration, not a recommendation to buy a blueprint.
Choose Regular if keeping your loadout options matters most. Choose Classic if the reset, published XP boost and bonus rewards suit your goal. Neither choice is the optional Weapon Prestige reset described later.

What rewards do the ten Prestiges offer?
Each Prestige takes inspiration from an Infinity Ward game. The table lists the published highlight for each one, with the Regular reward first and the Classic reward second. It is not every intermediate milestone.

| Prestige and inspiration | Highlighted rewards |
|---|---|
| 1 — Call of Duty (2003) | Mosin-Nagant blueprints: The Vet / The Vet Prime. |
| 2 — Call of Duty 2 | PPSh-41 blueprints: Calm Resolve / Trench Fiend. |
| 3 — Call of Duty 4 | SAS skins: Watchtower / Watchtower Prime. |
| 4 — Modern Warfare 2 (2009) | Finn LMG blueprints: Terminal / Torn Up. |
| 5 — Modern Warfare 3 (2011) | Army SF Airborne skins: Razor One / Razor One Prime. |
| 6 — Ghosts | Axion blueprints: Ghosts Legend / Ghosts Legend Prime. |
| 7 — Infinite Warfare | Army SF Airborne skins: Warfighter / Warfighter Prime. |
| 8 — Modern Warfare (2019) | M4 blueprints: 141 / 141 Prime. |
| 9 — Modern Warfare II (2022) | Reece skins: Sable / Sable Prime. |
| 10 — Modern Warfare 4 | Sang 9mm blueprints: Boksu / Boksu Prime. |
The first Prestige’s preview also shows Sandstorm for Army SF Airborne as an instant reward. Its other listed milestones include the 2003 loading screen at level 10, an emblem at 20, the Engage! charm at 30, Men of Service decal at 40 and the Mosin-Nagant blueprint at 50. Check your chosen path’s reward screen for the exact version you are pursuing.
What happens at Prestige Master and level 1,000?
Complete all ten player Prestiges to enter Prestige Master. Progress then continues above 55 toward level 1,000 and Prestige Legend. The official guide publishes these early highlights:
- On entry: Paragon skin for Park and the Orange level-color option.
- Level 60: Best of the Best loading screen.
- Level 65: Prestige Master 56 emblem.
- Level 70: Pinnacle weapon charm.
- Level 80: Containment Breach weapon sticker.
- Level 90: Master Renegade Han 86 blueprint.
- Level 100 onward: Navy level color at 100, more colors every 25 levels, and additional legacy icon sets every 100 levels.
The ultimate Prestige Legend rewards remain classified. Paragon is a Prestige Master reward, not an automatic reward for beating the Campaign. Our Campaign Operator unlock guide covers the separate mission-earned characters.

What is confirmed about MW4 weapon levels?
Weapon XP and player rank answer different questions. Your player level opens loadout items; a particular gun’s level advances that gun’s attachments and camo milestones. The official launch weapons article lists 33 weapons, with different maximum levels: for example, the Han 86 and M4 have 72, while the Sang 9mm has 38. There is no universal 72-level cap.
Supported weapons unlock an Apex Attachment at maximum level. Compatible shared attachments only need unlocking once. Use our MW4 weapons directory to find a gun, but prefer the new official launch specifications wherever older beta or leak figures differ.
Digital pre-orders and pre-purchases can start leveling weapons in DMZ Early Access on October 20. Activision says those attachments and camos will be available in Multiplayer at the October 23 launch. That is an early start on progression, not an automatic Mastery unlock.

How do Military and Special camos unlock?
Each weapon has eight Military camos earned at weapon-level milestones. On the Han 86, those milestones are levels 10, 18, 25, 34, 42, 50, 57 and 65. Other weapons use different levels. These unlocks belong to each weapon individually.
Each weapon also supplies three Special camos. Reaching their required weapon levels opens combat challenges; completing them adds the finish to a universal pool usable on other weapons. You can begin eligible Special challenges before finishing every Military milestone.
The base camo grind is shared between modes, with objectives adjusted for the mode. For example, the Sang 9mm’s Autumn challenge opens at weapon level 13 and asks for 25 aiming-down-sights player kills in Multiplayer or 75 enemy kills in DMZ. Check the current mode’s wording instead of copying the Multiplayer number into a DMZ checklist.
How do Gold, Platinum and Divergence unlock?
Finish all eight Military and three Special camos for a weapon to access its Completionist challenges. The later stages require progress across a class or the launch arsenal, so focusing on just one favorite rifle will eventually leave a prerequisite unfinished.
| Camo | Access requirement | Next objective |
|---|---|---|
| Gold | That weapon’s Military and Special camos. | 15 eliminations in one Multiplayer match, or 100 in one DMZ match. |
| Platinum | Gold on the weapon class; eight assault rifles in the published example. | Class-specific challenge. Han 86: 50 player headshots in Multiplayer or 100 enemy headshots in DMZ. |
| Harmonic Break | All 33 Platinum challenges. | Class-specific challenge. Han 86: 25 player double kills in Multiplayer or 50 enemy double kills in DMZ. |
| Divergence | Complete 33 Harmonic Break challenges. | Awarded at that milestone; opens Mastery 1 challenges. |
The Han 86 objectives are examples, not a universal list. Platinum and Harmonic Break objectives differ by class. The publisher also explicitly allows the illustrated Platinum and Harmonic objectives to be completed wholly or partly in Multiplayer or DMZ.

What are the Multiplayer and DMZ Mastery requirements?
Divergence opens the first Mastery challenge; each subsequent tier requires the previous tier. These are the objectives Activision publishes for the two launch modes:
In Multiplayer, the order is Mercurial Drift → Polyatomic Reforged → Orion Reforged. In DMZ, it is Chiral → Ripple Tide → Helio. Completing one mode’s first tier does not substitute for the other mode’s prerequisite.
| Mode and camo | Objective after its prerequisite |
|---|---|
| Multiplayer: Mercurial Drift | Get 10 kills in a match, 250 times. |
| Multiplayer: Polyatomic Reforged | Get three kills without taking damage, 300 times. |
| Multiplayer: Orion Reforged | Get five kills without dying, 500 times. |
| DMZ: Chiral | Get 2,500 Tier 3+ enemy kills. |
| DMZ: Ripple Tide | Exfil two LT dog tags in one deployment, 50 times. |
| DMZ: Helio | Get 25,000 kills using Legendary Weapons on a Max Level Operator. |
These published totals do not establish a completion time. The text also does not clearly settle whether every Mastery counter is per weapon or account-wide. We are not multiplying the totals by 33 or promising one completion unlocks every weapon. The launch challenge screens must resolve that detail.
Warzone’s Parallax, Damascus Reforged and Empyros are named, but their objectives remain classified until Season 1. A Warzone camo name is not a confirmed launch-day challenge.
Does Weapon Prestige reset your camos?
No: earned camos and other weapon customization are retained. After reaching a gun’s maximum level, optional Weapon Prestige resets that gun to level 1 and relocks its attachments, except Apex and Weapon Blueprint attachments. It does not relock shared attachments on other guns.
The separate Pyroclast route awards its first form at Weapon Prestige 1 level 1, Terminus at that Prestige’s maximum level, Scatter at Weapon Prestige Master level 150 and Cascade at 250. Reaching the second maximum automatically enters Weapon Prestige Master without another level reset.
How do reticles, Daily Challenges and Calling Cards work?
Reticles: equip an unlocked optic, then use Gunsmith → Appearance → Reticle to see its challenges. Aiming-down-sights eliminations unlock additional designs; associated color variants unlock together. Progress belongs to that specific optic and is shared across compatible weapons and modes, with Warzone joining in Season 1. It is not one counter for every optic.
Daily Challenges: Multiplayer offers three, with an additional XP bonus for completing the full set. You can reroll one challenge once per day. Warzone receives its additional daily set in Season 1. The announcement does not give a dependable XP-per-hour rate or prove which mode levels you fastest.
Calling Cards: the Career menu separates regular Multiplayer, DMZ and Shared Mode collections from Elite Multiplayer, Elite DMZ and Elite Campaign collections. Complete challenges for individual cards, sets for animated Mastery cards, and broader categories for further rewards. These “Mastery” cards are not Mastery weapon camos.
You can track up to nine Calling Card challenges in Tracked & Near Complete. Use that alongside your weapon’s camo checklist: a task may support more than one personal goal, but similar wording does not establish identical counter rules.
Do MWII DMZ veterans receive rewards?
The publisher lists three reward sets, available starting October 20 during MW4 DMZ Early Access when using the same Activision account:
- Participation: playing the MWII DMZ Beta qualifies for Beta On Record emblem and Beta Squad Calling Card.
- At least 50 hours played: qualifies for the DMZ Beta 50 Hours emblem and Calling Card.
- Serpentine unlocked in that Beta: qualifies for the animated Beta Serpent emblem and animated DMZ Slither Calling Card.
These are named recognition rewards. The announcement does not say your entire MWII weapon inventory, ranks or Serpentine camo transfers into MW4. Existing play-history eligibility is different from completing a new MW4 challenge.
What should you work toward first?
Choose the reward before making a checklist. For player-rank rewards, follow the Career progression track and your chosen Prestige path. For an attachment build, track that weapon’s level. For Divergence, track Completionist prerequisites across the arsenal. For Orion or Helio, add the relevant mode Mastery stages. For Pyroclast, follow Weapon Prestige instead. One progress bar cannot represent all four goals.
Track your camo goal
Organize your checklist alongside the MW4 camo guide. Cross-check any older leak-based entries against today’s official requirements and the launch menus.
That distinction also matters when comparing Boss services. Weapon Leveling and named finishes such as Orion Reforged describe different targets. Those listings remain closed to ordering as checked October 19. No lobby method, completion time or final service coverage is established by this announcement.
For a separate goal available now, Boss lists Campaign Rewards. That service concerns campaign unlocks, not weapon levels or Mastery camos. Check its current platform and account-access terms before ordering.
Quick answers
What is MW4’s maximum rank?
The initial player track ends at 55 before Prestige. DMZ has a separate 70-level track; player Prestige Master continues to 1,000 after ten Prestiges. Weapon caps vary by gun.
Can you change between Classic and Regular Prestige?
Yes. The official announcement says the choice is offered again when entering each new Prestige. Regular retains loadout unlocks, while Classic resets them for its published benefits.
Are these MW4 camo requirements still leaks?
No. The requirements above come from Activision’s October 19 official announcements. Details the publisher leaves unclear remain identified as unknown; we have not tested launch challenge counters.
Can DMZ progress help with Multiplayer camos?
Yes, the published base camo grind is shared and adapts objectives by mode. Mode Mastery remains separate; earning a DMZ Mastery finish does not establish completion of Multiplayer Mastery.
Does maxing every gun automatically unlock Orion?
No. Weapon levels, Completionist requirements and the three Multiplayer Mastery stages are separate steps. Optional Weapon Prestige adds its own Pyroclast rewards.
