The Biggest Differences
A New (and Old!) Setting
The setting might be one of the biggest flashpoints for Black Ops 6 vs. MW3. It seems like Treyarch and Raven Software have finally found the Goldilocks zone for the series. Titles like Black Ops and Black Ops: Cold War took place in the late 60s, while BO2 was set in a dystopian near-future.
Black Ops 6 takes the series closer to modern combat, placing players right in the Gulf War era. This setting is going to impact every facet of the new game.

- Maps: For better or worse, Modern Warfare 3 was largely populated with fan-favorite maps from the original Modern Warfare 2. New Progression Systems
2019’s Modern Warfare reboot did many things right, but the alteration of the old prestige system was a notable misstep. Comparing Black Ops 6 vs. MW3’s ranked system reveals one massive difference: the return of the classic Prestige ladder–with a twist.
Hitting level 55 will give you the option to prestige. If you choose to do so, you’ll return to level 1 and be able to level up all over again. This time, however, there will be no cap on prestige levels. Where earlier prestige systems capped out at level 10, this one will be infinite. This exciting prestige change will no doubt extend the longevity of this upcoming title.
Will Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM) Return in Black Ops 6?
SBMM has been a hot-button issue for the community since Modern Warfare 2 (2022). Activision hasn’t strictly stated whether SBMM will be back for BO6, but all signs indicate that it will most likely return. If you’re weighing MW3 vs. Black Ops 6 in terms of ranked play and expecting a massive change here, you might be in for a surprise.
For instance, the developer recently ran a secret test on its MW3 servers where it turned off SBMM for certain groups of players. The tests indicated that players were more likely to rage quit or stop playing the game entirely when SBMM was off.
Movement
Movement is undoubtedly one of the biggest differences between Black Ops 6 and Modern Warfare 3, and it’s going to be a major selling point for the game. Activision extensively highlighted its all-new ‘Omnimovement’ system during the Xbox Showcase.
- 360-Degree Movement: Comparing MW3 vs. Black Ops 6 when it comes to the movement system reveals a night-and-day difference. Omnimovement will support 360-degree movement instead of the usual front-back-side-side system. Players will be able to run, dive, and crawl in virtually any direction.
- Intelligent Movement: The second element of this new system revolves around environment-sensitive movement. This feature will allow players to automatically jump over or crouch under environmental obstacles when turned on.
According to the developers, the ultimate aim of this new movement system is to make combat feel as natural as breathing. It’s certainly going to achieve that objective, but it will also most likely speed up the overall pace of the gunplay.
